The Department for Transport Shipping and Ports Minister Robert Goodwill is joined by senior executives from some of the UK’s largest ports to explain how, by investing in state of the art technology, they are helping to ensure that the UK can continue to meet the needs of the growing global maritime sector. Find out more about the publication of the Maritime Growth Study at the launch of London International Shipping 2015 here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-maritime-report-launched-as-london-international-shipping-week-gets-underway Video Transcript: Robert Goodwill MP The UK ports sector is one of the largest in Europe, handling some half a billion tonnes of freight and around 22 million passengers annually. Geoff Lippett One of the key differentiators for UK ports is the fact that we’re a privatised business predominantly in the large UK ports - that makes us very different from our European competitors who are predominantly state owned. We are therefore more agile. We do a lot more of our own investment. And that makes us attractive for international customers. Clemence Cheng It’s a very, very big plus as far as international investors are concerned. The connectivities of the UK ports, both to continental Europe and also internally, a very good infrastructure to connect us to the hinterland of the UK is also a very important factor for investors. Robin Mortimer London Gateway is a huge new investment in London, £1.5 billion new terminal, a new berth opening next year, so we’ll have the 24/7 container terminal capable of handling the world’s biggest ships. Geoff Lippett There’s physical handling capabilities which means that there’s more automation to unload all types of products. So that’s less people. There’s better IT platforms available for customers and for ports, which means there’s much more visibility for products, for ship owners, for cargo owners, forwarding agents and the ports themselves. Clemence Cheng We are having a lot of big vessels arriving in the Asia-Europe trade. I think the investments in technology and the connectivity, not just the physical connectivities but the data connectivities, with the wider logistic industries become extremely important. Robert Goodwill MP By investing in state of the art technology our port sector ensures that the UK is able to meet the needs of today’s shippers including the ability to handle the world’s largest vessels now, and well into the future.

Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “FOB - Free On Board” The FOB abbreviation is an import/export term relating to the point at which responsibility for goods passes from seller – the exporter to buyer or importer. It's in this listing because it's commonly misunderstood and also has potentially significant financial implications. FOB meant originally that the seller is liable for the goods and is responsible for all costs of transport, insurance, etc., until and including the goods being loaded at the port. Logically FOB also meant and still means that the seller is liable for any loss or damage up to the point that the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the FOB port, and that thereafter the buyer assumes responsibility for the goods and the costs of transport and the liability. From the seller's point of view an FOB price must therefore include his costs of transport from factory or warehouse, insurance and loading, because the seller is unable to charge these costs as extras once the FOB price has been stated. The FOB expression originates particularly from the meaning that the buyer is free of liability and costs of transport up to the point that the goods are loaded on board the ship slightly different ways, even to the extent that other interpretations are placed on the acronym, most commonly 'Freight On Board ‘While liability and responsibility for goods passes from seller to buyer at the point that goods are agreed to be FOB, the FOB principle does not correlate to payment terms, which is a matter for separate negotiation. FOB is a mechanism for agreeing price and transport responsibility, not for agreeing payment terms. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy

Chemical cluster operations are supported by a logistically good location, workforce availability, and RD with internationally top level capabilities. Port of Kokkola is the third largest general port in Finland. Significant investments have been made into rail capacity. The airport is only 20 kilometres from Kokkola city center. The educational network of Kokkola region offers training paths from vocational to doctoral education. As a result, chemical technology experts can be trained to meet company needs. The research laboratories of Kokkola campus, with its pilot plants, are a meeting place for research groups of Kokkola University Consortium Chydenius, researchers from Centria University of Applied Sciences, and researchers of companies. The existing chemical cluster, with its multiple synergy benefits and functional infrastructure, creates interesting conditions for new technologies and products by connecting chemistry and bioeconomy. This also increases the need for novel services. As there are 70 hectares of vacant, plug-in ready industrial sites in the KIP area, Kokkola is a unique environment for new kinds of successful business operations. Canary Wharf – the banking and investment capital of Europe in the heart of London On the east side of the Capitol and bounded by the mighty River Thames, its iconic 21st century skyline offers spectacular views across what is arguably the World’s most dynamic, prosperous, and exciting super city. Rising from the ruins of former docklands, this city within a city today contains around 14 million square feet of unique office, retail and commercial space. Home to a who’s who of global corporations, Including Barclays, HSBC, Citigroup, Credit Suisse and JP Morgan These companies collectively employ over 100,000 highly skilled and motivated workers. With over 300 exclusive shops, cafes, bars, restaurants, movie, music, dance and theatre venues Canary Wharf also offers a dazzling array of fine first class shopping and entertainment. And the excellent transport links including air, rail, road, bus and even boat and cable car access, make it easy to get in out of area. London City Airport is just 3 miles away and it’s less than fifteen minutes by public transport. They offer 32 destinations in Europe, as well as business and first class flights to New York’s JFK and, they also facilitate private jets. London’s Major international airports, Heathrow, Gatwick and Stanstead are less than an hour away by rail. Already served by the Docklands Light Railway, National Rail’s Thameslink and the London Underground’s Jubilee Line, Together these transport links help whisk commuters in and out of the city, around the UK and across the world with envied ease. But that’s not all – with London’s new high speed rail network Crossrail –due to be completed by 2018, travellers will enjoy a direct connection between all of London’s main employment centres. The largest infrastructure project in Europe, the £17 billion railroad will serve 40 stations, carry 200 million passengers a year, will cut journey times across the city in half. Canary Wharf to Heathrow Airport will take 39 minutes and Tottenham Court Road in the Centre of London will be just 11 minutes And, that’s not the only benefit - Significantly the new rail network has already increased property values in some areas along its route by as much as 40% Closed in 1980 Canary Wharf was once part of the busiest port in the world. After a decade of disuse and decline an inspired re-generation project transformed the area into what is now a prime location for businesses, tourists and residents. With property prices doubling over the past ten years Canary Wharf can now proudly boast to have established itself as arguably the most sought after commercial and residential space in the World and, it is still expanding. Championed by the UK government and spearheaded by private developers the regeneration of the neighbouring Wood Wharf has been designed to complement and enhance the Canary wharf environs. Developers envisage a brand new urban quarter that will see a mix of High tech and new media firms alongside future residents. When complete Wood Wharf will see the addition of 4.9 million square feet of commercial and residential space offering new homes, businesses, schools, doctors as well as recreational facilities and waters edge walkways. Phase one Is due to be complete in 2018 and will include new offices, homes, hotels, shops, restaurants and bars and cafes will be a destination of choice enjoyed by tens of thousands of new tourists, workers and residents alike. With major developments like Wood Wharf and Crossrail the future looks positive for investors in the London property market According to propertywire.com, annual price growth in Canary Wharf was at estimated 14.4% last year alone and a 15 to 20 % annual growth is the forecast. And with the rental market in the Capitol as strong as ever corporate clients, from China, the Middle East, Europe and the Americas have already chosen to make Canary Wharf and London its European Headquarters With home offices on the East and West side of the UK’s capitol, one in Nine Elms and the other in the Canary Wharf itself, Henry Wiltshire International is perfectly situated to accommodate, advise and manage your London property portfolio. And, with offices in Hong Kong, Singapore and Abu Dhabi we are positioned to serve and offer investors Worldwide easy access to this lucrative market.
