  • What is FOB - Free On Board?

Welcome to the Investors Trading Academy talking glossary of financial terms and events. Our word of the day is “FOB - Free On Board” The FOB abbreviation is an import/export term relating to the point at which responsibility for goods passes from seller – the exporter to buyer or importer. It's in this listing because it's commonly misunderstood and also has potentially significant financial implications. FOB meant originally that the seller is liable for the goods and is responsible for all costs of transport, insurance, etc., until and including the goods being loaded at the port. Logically FOB also meant and still means that the seller is liable for any loss or damage up to the point that the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the FOB port, and that thereafter the buyer assumes resp...

Logically FOB also meant and still means that the seller is liable for any loss or damage up to the point that the goods are loaded onto the vessel at the FOB port, and that thereafter the buyer assumes responsibility for the goods and the costs of transport and the liability. From the seller's point of view an FOB price must therefore include his costs of transport from factory or warehouse, insurance and loading, because the seller is unable to charge these costs as extras once the FOB price has been stated. The FOB expression originates particularly from the meaning that the buyer is free of liability and costs of transport up to the point that the goods are loaded on board the ship slightly different ways, even to the extent that other interpretations are placed on the acronym, most commonly 'Freight On Board ‘While liability and responsibility for goods passes from seller to buyer at the point that goods are agreed to be FOB, the FOB principle does not correlate to payment terms, which is a matter for separate negotiation. FOB is a mechanism for agreeing price and transport responsibility, not for agreeing payment terms. By Barry Norman, Investors Trading Academy

The UK ports sector is one of the largest in Europe, handling some half a billion tonnes of freight and around 22 million passengers annually. The Department for Transport Shipping and Ports Minister Robert Goodwill is joined by senior executives from some of the UK’s largest ports to explain how, by investing in state of the art technology, they are helping to ensure that the UK can continue to meet the needs of the growing global maritime sector. Find out more about the publication of the Maritime Growth Study at the launch of London International Shipping 2015 here: https://www.gov.uk/government/news/major-maritime-report-launched-as-london-international-shipping-week-gets-underway Video Transcript: Robert Goodwill MP The UK ports sector is one of the largest in Europe, handling some half a billion tonnes of freight and around 22 million passengers annually. Geoff Lippett One of the key differentiators for UK ports is the fact that we’re a privatised business predominantly in the large UK ports - that makes us very different from our European competitors who are predominantly state owned. We are therefore more agile. We do a lot more of our own investment. And that makes us attractive for international customers. Clemence Cheng It’s a very, very big plus as far as international investors are concerned. The connectivities of the UK ports, both to continental Europe and also internally, a very good infrastructure to connect us to the hinterland of the UK is also a very important factor for investors. Robin Mortimer London Gateway is a huge new investment in London, £1.5 billion new terminal, a new berth opening next year, so we’ll have the 24/7 container terminal capable of handling the world’s biggest ships. Geoff Lippett There’s physical handling capabilities which means that there’s more automation to unload all types of products. So that’s less people. There’s better IT platforms available for customers and for ports, which means there’s much more visibility for products, for ship owners, for cargo owners, forwarding agents and the ports themselves. Clemence Cheng We are having a lot of big vessels arriving in the Asia-Europe trade. I think the investments in technology and the connectivity, not just the physical connectivities but the data connectivities, with the wider logistic industries become extremely important. Robert Goodwill MP By investing in state of the art technology our port sector ensures that the UK is able to meet the needs of today’s shippers including the ability to handle the world’s largest vessels now, and well into the future.

Helping clients make smart financial decisions - http://www.intwealthmgt.com In this show, we find out about the worst enemy of investors - themselves. -- Connect with Integrated Wealth Management -- Follow us on Twitter: https://goo.gl/3YIg3g and on LinkedIn: https://goo.gl/8rH3jx Like us on Facebook: https://goo.gl/nGkAXV -- Transcript -- RP: Hello there. The investor’s worst enemy, it’s been said, is likely to be himself. Regardless of whether they invest actively or passively, investors often harm their portfolios through the way they behave. Behavioural coaching is an important role of a financial adviser. But is there anything investors can do to protect themselves from their own emotional biases? Well, behavioural finance expert Tim Richards says one thing you can do is to write down your reasoning every time you make an investment decision and, every year or so, to record the returns you achieve. TR: Most investors don’t know how much they make. They don’t actually measure how much they actually return and they don’t have anything to compare with against what market returns might be. So how on earth can they figure out whether they’re a good investor or not? RP: Another problem is that people often choose to rewrite the past — usually to protect their emotions. Investors do it all the time. TR: They will ignore things that have gone wrong, or they’ll put them in a separate port, which is a thing called mental accounting. So it’s not actually part of their main port that loss was somewhere else they don’t have to worry about that. And they suffer from hindsight bias. So hindsight bias is massive. The CIA called hindsight bias ineradicable. They spend a lot of time obviously with their operatives trying to figure out what’s actually happened. If it’s not written down at the time, people can’t remember. Everything they think they remember is biased by whatever’s happened since. RP: Investors often come unstuck during or after a market correction or crash, or when markets are particularly volatile. So what can you do at times like that to help yourself stay the course? TR: There are no known ways of actually preventing people being scared of this stuff. Fear, uncertainty and doubt reigns through out the markets. The only thing in this area that really works is having an understanding of history. So having a basic understanding of what’s happened in financial markets over longs periods of time. I mean we’re not talking over, you know, two or three years. We’re talking over twenty, thirty, forty even a hundred years. Is really the only thing that can actually give people the comfort to stay the course of time. RP: Finally, what’s the one piece of advice that Tim Richards would give to investors on managing their behaviour? TR: The best thing you can do, with any investing fund is, don’t look at the value of it. Ok. Don’t. Essentially anybody who looks at what their doing more than once a year is probably looking at their funds too often. RP: That was Tim Richards. If you found his tips helpful, you might want to follow his blog. It’s called The Psy-Fi Blog and you can find it at www.psyfi-tec.com. That’s psyfitec.com. Thanks for watching. Until next time, goodbye.

I want you to contrast this with say a single tweet about a certain coal mine that may have had its funding pulled. Once voice in the wilderness can be ignore and it’s probably very doubtful that it actually is true. People understood this. But where you get a weight of number say, for example, on the surprised student from Telstra, you know instantly that everyone’s talking about it and you know that you can believe it.
